Turkey is a great place to start for a healthy sandwich. It's low in fat and has a lot of natural flavor, especially when compared to chicken.

This healthy turkey sandwich recipe is one my family's favorite, especially in the hot summer. It's a sandwich that tastes so good, it's hard to believe how healthy it is!

Turkey is a great place to start for a healthy sandwich. It's low in fat and has a lot of natural flavor, especially when compared to chicken.

Ideally you want real, unprocessed turkey meat. If you have a large oven, and a well-stocked deli nearby, you may want to bake your own fresh turkey. Or, of course, use your left-overs from holidays!

Otherwise, lunch meat turkey from your grocery store is fine. But it will contain more salt, and may not taste as good.

In terms of bread, you want it as fresh as possible. Turkey can be a somewhat dry meat, and using fresh bread will help offset dryness without using as many high calorie sauces.

You can use nearly any vegetable you like for a topping. Here is my family's favorite combination below.

Let's get started!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices fresh whole grain bread
  • 3 thin slices or small chunks of turkey breast
  • 1 Tbsp. mustard, (or your favorite condiment, like horseradish, or basil pesto)
  • 1 Tbsp. fat-free mayo (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese*
  • 1/2 sliced bell pepper
  • 2 slices of tomato
  • 1 very thin slice of sweet onion
  • 1 leaf of green-leaf lettuce, or 1/2 cup mixed salad greens
  • salt & pepper to taste

*Parmesan cheese is a very low calorie choice for cheese. It has so much flavor, with so little calories or fat!

Directions

Put your mayo and mustard on your bread. Put the turkey slices on the bottom slice of bread, followed by the sliced vegetables and salad greens.

Grate Parmesan cheese over the open sandwich and add salt & pepper to your taste.

Close the sandwich and enjoy this healthy treat!

You may like to garnish with olives, or my favorite, pickled cherry peppers. 🙂
