The Monte Cristo Sandwich

Monte Cristo Sandwich Picture

The Monte Cristo Sandwich was an absolute favorite of mine as a child. It's a great one to eat when you are really hungry. All of the meat, cheese and egg really fills you up! Not to mention it tastes great! I love to eat it with a bowl of tomato soup.

How exactly the "proper recipe" is made differs from region to region. There is not any clear, "true" recipe. However, it seems that this sandwich is an offshoot of the french Croque-monsieur. The recipe found here is my mother's. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This recipe is for 2 sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. milk
  • 6 slices of ham*
  • 2-4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. honey mustard or Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp. butter
  • 4 slices of white or whole wheat bread
  • toothpicks

*You may also use Turkey for this recipe. Or, try both!

Directions

In a bowl, mix the eggs and milk and beat until its smooth.

Spread your mustard over all four pieces of bread. Put three slices of ham on each sandwich. Cover with the Swiss cheese and close the sandwich. At this point I like to use a toothpick to help hold the sandwich closed.

Melt butter in a skillet until it begins to bubble.

Dip each side of the sandwich into the egg mixture and then place it into the hot buttered frying pan. Fry the sandwich slowly until golden brown on each side. Remove toothpicks. :)

Slice in half and enjoy!
