Simple Tuna Melt

I love making simple tuna melts, I always have. Tuna is an awesome light, lean meat. And when combined with cheese is hard to beat!

This is the simple recipe that always would please me, and the rest of my family, as a kid. It has the base of a tuna salad sandwich recipe, but with cheese melted on top. It's a nice variation to the cold sandwich, to make it more of a dinner meal, rather than for lunch.

*This recipe yields 2 sandwich melts.


  • 2 cans of Tuna, drained
  • 3 Tbsp of Mayonnaise, just enough to coat ingredients
  • 2 sticks of Celery, chopped finely
  • 1 chopped Green Onion
  • 1 Tbsp finely chopped Bell Pepper
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced
  • pinch of Salt
  • fresh ground Black Pepper
  • 4 slices of Rye Bread
  • 4 slices Swiss Cheese
  • 2 slices of Tomato (optional)


Preheat your broiler.

Lightly toast the rye bread, using the broiler or your toaster.

Combine the drained tuna with mayonnaise, celery, onion, bell pepper, salt and pepper in a bowl.

Spoon tuna mixture onto two slices of the rye bread.

Add 1 slice of tomato and 2 slices of cheese for each sandwich.

Place in the broiler for 4-6 minutes, until the cheese is well melted and sandwich is heated through.

*Close the sandwich with remaining two slices of bread and enjoy!

*Tip: You can also decide to leave the sandwiches open-faced by spooning the tuna mixture on all four slices of toasted bread and eating them more like "tuna toast."
